Vegan & Animal Testing information
All our hair colours are suitable for use by vegans and vegetarians, along with Tints of Nature Shampoo, Conditioner, Hydrate Treatment and Seal & Shine. Our Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Scalp Treatment both contain a milk derivative, which may be something that vegans choose not to use.
Absolutely none of our products are tested on animals. In fact, all Tints of Nature (Herb UK) products are accredited by Choose Cruelty Free (CCF). CCF is an independent, non-profit organisation which actively promotes a cruelty-free lifestyle. In addition, Herb UK is also a member of the Cosmetics Toiletry & Perfumery Association (CTPA). As a member of the CTPA Herb UK is actively working to promote practices that do not require animal testing, and non-animal tested ingredients.
Gluten is a protein found in cereals wheat, rye and barley. The most common sources of gluten in most people’s diets are bread, pasta, cereals, flour, pastry, pizza bases, cakes and biscuits. Gluten can also be found in processed foods such as soups, sauces, ready meals and sausages. According to experts at the world renowned Mayo Clinic, gluten only causes a problem if you eat it. It cannot be absorbed through the skin.
This is echoed by Coeliac UK, the world’s oldest and largest coeliac disease charity, which was established in 1968. They further state that it is unlikely that the daily use of lip balm or lipstick would lead to swallowing enough product to cause a problem.
Gluten intolerance in some people could lead to an itchy, blistering rash. This is caused by ingesting gluten and not by skin contact.
It is possible to be sensitive to ingredients used in cosmetics, but this may in no way be related to gluten intolerance. If you experience skin irritation when using cosmetics, then you should consult a doctor.
About “Sensitivity” testing
It is possible for people to have a skin reaction to the ingredients used in anything, whether they are pure, natural substances or man-made chemicals. Although we use as many natural ingredients as possible in Tints of Nature, it is possible that a customer may experience an allergic reaction to an ingredient in our product range. This is because it is possible to become sensitive to ingredients over time. Also some medication may have an effect, as well as permanent make-up or tattoos. An irritated or damaged scalp may also cause a potential reaction.
You must always perform a sensitivity test before applying Tints of Nature, even if you have not had a reaction to hair colour before.
We always recommend that a sensitivity test is carried out at least 48 hours before use, every time you use Tints of Nature and that you always follow the full instructions included in each box.
PPD (Paraphenylenediamine or P-Phenylenediamine) is an ingredient used in permanent hair colourants whose use is governed by strict safety regulations – as are all ingredients in the hair colour industry. It is a type of pigment that is needed for almost all hair shade colours, but especially for the darker shades, as it provides the best way to achieve permanent hair colour and is the only way of successfully colouring grey hair.
As with all ingredients, an allergic response may develop over time. A very small percentage (approx 0.1%) of the population can develop an allergic reaction to PPD after hair colourant use. You must always perform a sensitivity test before applying Tints of Nature, even if you have not had a reaction to hair colour before. PPD does NOT build up in the body.
The maximum amount of PPD permitted to be used in hair colours is currently set to a maximum level of 2% in hair colourant products. In keeping with our mission to create products that are as natural as possible, our Natural Black (1N) is the only colour that uses 2% PPD, and the average percentage of PPD across our colour range is only 0.42%
Although we use USP pharmaceutical grade Propylene Glycol and consider it to be safe for use, we are currently phasing out this ingredient and replacing it with Propanediol - a renewably sourced material with ECOCERT certification. For information about Propanediol, please click here.
Our “Certified Organic” ingredients are indicated on the ingredients list for each product by * or **.
